I wanted to have more structural detail in my QGIS live hillshading so I blended a duplicate layer with the sun angle set to directly overhead (90°) and the blending mode as darken.
It seems to make steep structures more prominent.

It seems to make steep structures more prominent.
There is definitely an improvement to be seen in the blended overhead hillshading compared to the multidirectional hillshading, especially in the northern part. Much more detail to be seen there. The southern part beneath the roads? does not profit as much. Nevertheless a nice method which could come in handy at times! Still I think for a hillshade there’s overall too much detail in the DEM. But that does not lessen the technique at all …
